Each year on January 1st, people across the world start the New Year full of motivation for their resolution to make a change. Fast-forward to two months later however, and many of us have gone back to old habits and lost sight of what we were trying to achieve.
Let’s make this year different. Research shows you’re more likely to stick to a plan with the support of others*, so rope in your friends – support each other to stay on track when your motivation wavers. Choose a type of exercise that you enjoy and make fitness fun. Take a cooking class and get creative with healthy recipes. Reward yourself. Set a realistic goal and come up with a plan to achieve it in a healthy way.

A WEIGHT OFF YOUR MIND
Contrary to what the scales might be telling you, all weight was not created equal. You may have heard that ‘muscle weighs more than fat’, but there’s a little more to it…
A kilogram of fat weighs the same as a kilogram of muscle. What’s important to note however, is the amount of space that each requires in the body. A kilogram of fat takes up more space in the body compared to a kilogram of muscle that’s denser and more compact.
To put this into context, when you begin exercising and looking after what you eat, you start losing fat and generating muscle. As some of the grams of fat lost are now muscle mass, your weight may not change or could even increase.
What does this mean for you? If you’re hitting the bike, yoga mat and/or weight rack on a regular basis, don’t panic about the number on the scales! As long as you’re eating balanced, nutritious meals as well as exercising, your ratio of muscle to fat is likely to be improving**. Caring for your health and improving your lifestyle is a good thing, so focus on how you feel rather than weight.
WHAT DOES ‘HEALTHY’ MEAN FOR YOU?
With regard to ‘ideal’ weight and assessing what a 'healthy weight' may be for you, many people turn to Body Mass Index (BMI). But does it really do what it says?
Calculated using height and weight, Body Mass Index ranks you on a numerical scale broken down into four categories that indicate whether your weight is: underweight, normal, overweight or obese. A BMI of 18-25 is considered normal.
However, while it is useful as a first evaluation tool, BMI doesn't take your body fat or muscle into account.Looking at just height and weight is like reading half a story and then guessing at the ending; meaning BMI might not always be the most appropriate approach.
