We all know that drinking water is a must, for optimal health*. But how much is enough and what’s the easiest way to know you’re hitting your target? We wanted to bust a few myths and give you the definitive low-down on hydrating ahead of the warmer months:
How much water do I need?
2-2.5 litres daily are a very general rule of thumb, but every body’s needs are different. Individual water needs depend on factors like age, gender, body mass, physical activity levels and climate. It is recommended to drink 2.0 litres (for women) and 2.5 litres (for men) of water per day via both drinks and food. Of this, about 70-80% of the daily water should come from drinks, and the remaining 20-30% should come from food, like fruit and vegetables.
Cold, tepid—or whatever?
Water temperature doesn’t really matter in hydration terms, just so long as you drink it! So, go with whatever you prefer.
Bottled, filtered or tap?
Using a water filter can improve taste, but it’s not essential. So, in essence, we have good water quite literally on tap!
How else can I reach my water goal?
Count fruit and herbal teas, diluted drinks like Herbalife AloeMax or Instant Herbal Beverage in your water goal. Remember that crunchy fruit and vegetables tend to be full of water, too. In fact, they usually provide about 20% of your daily water needs.
How can I tell if I'm not drinking enough water**?
Some or all of the following can be signs that you're not getting enough H2O:
-The feeling that muscles are tired, especially when exercising
-That 'morning breath' feeling
Ultimately, good hydration is a habit that worth cultivating, so fill up that water bottle, dish up that veggie or fruit salad and you’re well on your way! And if it’s still a struggle to get motivated, there are apps to help you out. Try the Daily Water reminder app for nudges to hydrate throughout the day and a handy tracking tool.
